Best Folding Bikes Review

The 1970s saw increased interest in the folding bike, and the popular Raleigh Twenty and Bickerton Portable have become the iconic folders of their decade. It was however the early 1980s that can be said to have marked the birth of the modern, compact folding bicycle, with competing tiny-footprint models from Dahon and Brompton.

There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer (who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them) audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world's first folding bike in 1973. Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose.

Many inventors started to tackle the challenge of making the bicycle portable during the first bicycle boom of the late 19th century. In 1887 Emmit G. Latta submitted a patent for a folding bicycle. In it, he stated that: "The object of this invention is to provide a machine that is safe, strong and serviceable and more easily steered than the machines now in use."

Today, altered shapes. The University of Houstons College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. The question of when the first bicycle was built isnt easily answered. First we must decide on what constitutes an actual bicycle.
