Utah has its fair share of ghost stories, one of which is the White Lady of Spring Canyon. West of the small town of Helper, Utah between mountains and mining remnants lies Spring Canyon. Coal mines used to fill the area of Spring Canyon, Utah. There are several accounts of the White Lady and several stories about who she is and why she is there.
This version says that her husband was killed in the mine and his body was never found. She has haunted the mine ever since grieving for her lost husband.
Another says that both her husband and a son were killed in a mine car accident, leaving her with an infant daughter who was kidnapped shortly after, thrown into a wash and drowned. The woman lost her mind and soon died. She haunts the wash searching for her daughter.
This version says after her husband died, she received no compensation and was left destitute with her baby, so she drowned her baby rather than let it starve to death and lost her mind before she died. She haunts the mine seeking vengeance.
Another report stated that she was killed in a rockslide or that her baby was killed and she committed suicide and haunts the canyon where she died.
In a different tale says after her husband died, the mining company wouldn’t pay full compensation after arguing with them she was so angry and driving so fast that she accidentally drove her car off the road and was killed in a car accident. Now she haunts the mine seeking justice.
Numerous sightings of the spectral lady in white have been reported throughout the years. Some accounts claim she would float around the mines, enticing miners deep inside leading to certain disaster. Other stories less sinister, say rather than drawing them into the mines, she would warn them to leave so to avoid some kind of accident. Other reports tell of her walking around the abandoned town in the direction of the mining office, but disappearing just before she reaches it. There are a lot of ghost stories like this in Utah, many involving car accidents. However, this seems to be one of the creepiest.
