3 Tips For Staying Healthy in College

Amid all of the exams, study sessions, lectures, social events, and sleep, Utah college students have a hard time keeping their health on track. It doesn’t help that college campuses have vending machines fully stocked with sweets and treats loaded with calories and preservatives. Here are three tips to help any Utah college student keep their body healthy during the brutal college years.

Eat to live

Eat to live
Don’t think of it the other way around. We’ve all heard of the “Freshman 15.” With college comes stress and with stress comes overeating. Obviously you have to eat, but be careful to keep track of what you are consuming and how much of it. Consider packing your own lunch from home to avoid being tempted into a bag of crispy cholesterol by your rumbling stomach. For those mid-day or late-night cravings, just keep the portion size in mind. It’s ok to indulge, but don’t make a habit out of it.

Move it

Move it
Depending on your class schedule, it can be hard to fit in a decent workout. While regular exercise is important, little changes in your typical day can make a difference. Park in the college campus parking lot furthest from your class to get in a few extra steps or take the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator. Most Utah colleges offer fitness courses for students. They aren’t your typical gym class either. Try golf, surfing, or a zumba class to make it interesting and fun.

Beauty sleep

Beauty sleep
Utah college students are known for their all-nighter study sessions. This may be necessary occasionally, but try not to make a habit of it. Studies show that depriving our body of adequate rest can result in reduced brain function, headaches, and weight gain. The typical college student should be getting between seven and nine hours of sleep every night. If your sleep schedule is messed up, get back on track by keeping your room dark and quiet during the night to train your body to get back to a regular sleep schedule.
