Introduction Creating a SharePoint Development Virtual Machine is something you might have to do quite a few times as a Developer. Even if it's a pretty easy process, on a slow machine it can easily kill 4-5 hours of your day only to install SQL, SharePoint, Visual Studio and all the others tools you might need to get started.

In the last article of this series, I alluded that more could be done in SharePoint on Web Applications with the aid of PowerShell. Most developers and admins of SharePoint 2013 are familiar with the PowerShell's take-over of the "STSAdm-like" functionality of creating and maintaining SharePoint; however, what I am exploring are some in-roads into the branding of Web Applications through ad-hoc CSS and jQuery and JavaScript.

I created a SharePoint list for a customer to enter the staff details of a marketing department. The owner of the site wanted to add the first and last name. I thought it would be easy to automatically fill a column with the full name, based at first and last name.

Download SharePoint Designer 2013 and SharePoint Color Palette Tool. Create your theme using the SharePoint Color Palette Tool and save it as a .spcolor file. Suggest that you sort the Color Slot Grouping by UI Groups. Open SharePoint Designer 2013. Click Open Site. Enter the URL of your SharePoint page (Master Page).

TechEd 2013 season is slowly coming to an end, and we had two close TechEd events in Australia and New Zealand. Fortunately, Microsoft is nice enough to post the sessions online for free for the people who couldn't attend! A lot of SharePoint 2013 developer environments do not have access to internet, therefor it is hard to install the Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2012. When you download the Office Developer Tools from the MSDN website, you only get the small Microsoft Web Platform Installer (WPI) software that will then download the actual files from internet.
