Top 5 Sustainable Packaging Solutions

Packaging is obviously a necessity for many, many products, but it also plays a large role in our current waste problem. That’s why so many companies are starting to seek out sustainable packaging solutions. Here are 6 that are gaining steam!

1. Recycled Paperboard

One of the simplest sustainable packaging solutions is recycled paperboard (or cardboard, if you prefer that terminology). Paper products are made from a renewable resource (trees) instead of a nonrenewable resource (like crude oil, for example), which is a huge plus in the sustainability category. Add to that the fact that most paperboard is recyclable, and you’ve got a winning combination in terms of environmentalism.

2. Cornstarch Packaging

In recent years, scientists have learned to make some pretty good plastic like materials out of cornstarch. Sustainably sourced and made from organic materials, these cornstarch based plastics are a lot better for the environment than traditional plastic.

3. Mushroom Packaging

Like cornstarch packaging, mushroom packaging is made from completely organic materials. As it is made from mushrooms, it has very little negative impact on the environment, and as a bonus, it degrades quickly and easily. The only drawback to using mushrooms as a sustainable packaging solution is that as of now, mushroom packaging can really only be used for packaging small materials.

4. Seaweed Packaging

Seaweed may be the next big thing in terms of sustainable packaging solutions. It is safe, organic, and made from a very sustainable resource, which makes it a great possibility for further packaging innovations.

5. Recycled Plastic

Obviously, plastic is never going to be the first on a list of sustainable packaging solutions, but there are plenty or recyclable plastics that can be used for those applications that require something a little more heavy duty than packaging made out of organic materials.
