5 Tips for solo travel in Laos - All you need to know

As one of the lusher countries, Laos has a lot to offer. If you're travelling to Laos alone, here are some of the great solo travel tips to read through and decide on the cities you want to visit.

1

Luang Prabang

One city you can visit and spend weeks in is Luang Prabang, which is considered the ancient capital of Laos, where once the royal family resided and ruled. This sleepy capital is home to a whopping thirty temples and the popular Kuang Si waterfalls. The best part about Laos is that many small local businesses and companies have started to adopt sustainable tourism practices to support the economy, environment and local culture. As a solo traveller, you can stay up to 3 nights or longer in Laos to see the best of it. You can stay at Avani+ Luang Prabang or any other hotel in Luang Prabang that has a good reputation for safety factors. Nevertheless, there are plenty of safe backpacker hotels and guesthouses to consider.

2

Nong Khiaw

You can spend up to two nights at Nong Khiaw. Although this city is not usually on many travellers' radar, you're sure to end up enjoying every bit of your time in this quaint village. Roughly three hours from Luang Prabang, this village is essentially just a single main street which can be covered in under 20 minutes. However, don't let this get to you, as you can go hiking or just sit back and enjoy the quiet this village offers. Pha Thok cave hike, 100 waterfalls trek and Pha Deng Peak hike are three of the main hikes you can embark on!

3

Vientiane

There are numerous bucket-list-worthy things to do in Vientiane, but you can spend less than 3 days here and take it all in. Vientiane is saved for getting a glimpse of the local life at the night markets, witnessing religious and spiritual activities at the Pha That Luang temple and Buddha statue park, or just sitting back and enjoying a cup of coffee at the many cafes and bakeries that dot the capital of Laos. There are also plenty of Instagram-able locations in Vientiane to explore!

4

Vang Vieng

You can allocate three nights for Vang Vieng, which is quite a social city. Attracting a plethora of young backpackers from all over the world, this is where you need to go to let off some steam! Phraeng viewpoint, Jang caves, Tham Poukham cave and Nam Xay viewpoint are some of the popular attractions you can visit.

5

Pakse

There's not much to do in Pakse, and this village is mostly utilized as a transit point in between cities. However, if you're looking for some place to relax, indulge in some pampering and sip some cocktails on a rooftop, Pakse is ideal! There are also a couple of temples in Pakse you can consider visiting if you have the time.
