The Most Beautiful Parks and Green Spaces in Colombo – from wetlands to parks and the beach

Colombo is a wetland city with waterways snaking through it and the great Indian Ocean bordering its West. It is home to a significant number of parks, open spaces, and wetland sites that are ideal to get some fresh air and relax amidst the chaos of the city.

1

Viharamahadevi Park

This is the most iconic park in Colombo. It is situated in central Colombo and spans across a large area. Also known as Victoria Park, this site is beloved by families, couples, and solo wanderers who want to get away from their busy schedules. It is ideal for picnics, playing, reading, or even cuddling with a loved one. There is a dedicated play space for kids in one corner of the park, an open space for ponies in the centre, and a few huts scattered around. Another striking feature of the park is the Viharamahadevi Open Space Theatre that is situated within the park. This is a place that you must check out when you visit Colombo Sri Lanka.

Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green is a Colombo attraction that online sources such as Truly Sri Lanka often talk about!. The public area situated adjacent to the Galle Face Hotel is a historical landmark and a place that welcomes people from all over the country. There is a large open space where families have picnics, children fly kites, and vendors sell everything from flying snakes to bubbles. The space directly overlooks the Indian Ocean and is in close vicinity to a large number of high-end hotels. The Galle Face Green offers food that is truly iconic such as Shrimp wade, all kinds of rotis, and sweets. There are also restaurants dotted along the Green which have been offering their guests delicious food for decades. It is a beautiful place to visit even at night with the waves crashing along its walls and the city lights sparkling around. The available space in Gall Face Green has however shrunk over the years with the increased level of construction in the city.

The Wetlands

The Colombo wetlands are the very heart of the city. They provide numerous services to the city and its people including air regulation, flood mitigation, and food production. In the recent past, some of the wetland sites have been reinvented to provide the city's people an opportunity to spend more time in them. Diyatha Uyana, Beddagana Park and Diyasaru Park are all such sites. Diyatha Uyana is the most commercial site among the three with an aquarium and a food court drawing a lot of people to it. The site becomes even more vibrant during the weekends with additional vendors selling everything from plants, homemade crafts, fruits, etc. coming in. On the other hand, Beddagana and Diyasaru parks prioritize conservation and education. They are maintained with minimal anthropogenic influences and are ideal for bird watchers, nature lovers, and environmental enthusiasts in general. You can see some of Colombo's most attractive birds in these wetlands and if you're lucky even site a special mammal such as the otter.
