Toyota probably didn't anticipate this model line to reach 39 million units sold when they first put it on the market in 1966. It fit the current need perfectly though: it was small and got gas mileage, something that suited urban Japanese consumers very well. It has stood for that every since, keeping a permanent place in the hearts of Utahans worried about fuel economy.
The classic Ford truck is the only truck on the list, being the first and most popular truck model for half a century. The brand has been around so long that it has become generational, compelling younger Utah generations to follow their “ancestors” by getting a Ford truck. The Golf is what every hatchback wants to be. Hatchbacks are generally regarded as “pansy” cars by enthusiasts, but not the Golf, for it can be as much of a powerhouse as a sedan or coupe. Since it's release in 1974, it has achieved 28 million units sold. It's a surprise that this model has sold more than the Beetle.
The oldest on the list, the Beetle rolled out in 1938 in Germany, in an era when cars were simply gargantuan. Driving something that small became a novelty, and sales exploded in America after the end of WWII. It's retro model from the 90's renewed the fervor felt in decades past. It has sold 23 million units.
This model was significantly more popular in the UK than the U.S., mainly due to its effectiveness as a European rally car. Even though the line is no longer in production, 20 million Ford Escorts were sold since 1968.
