The Great Wall of China

This massive construction is nearly 2000 years old. An example of smart city planning, the Bund, or the Zhongshan Lu, is a large promenade that runs along the Huangpu River. Known for its European feel, the Bund is the location of 52 English and French-style buildings. Highlights include the Majestic Peace Hotel, Oriental Peace Tower and the Yu Garden. The Bund is a time capsule that stands as a reminder of the country's colonial past.

The Mausoleum of Light

The old city of Shenyang is an important trade centre and home to the Northern Imperial Tomb, also known as the Mausoleum of Light. Another one of UNESCO Heritage Sites in China, the Mausoleum of Light is popular for its remarkable architectural style. Emperor Huang Taiji is buried here in a tomb that covers nearly 18,000 square meters. According to historical records, it took more than eight years to build the burial site. A highlight of the site is Path of Souls; a laneway lined with sculptures of the emperor's favourite horses. Another noteworthy site found here is the Imperial Palace that dates back to the Qing era; a preserved palace complex in China.

The Hong Kong Skyline

Regarded as one of the most dramatic skylines, mainly due to the large number of skyscrapers, the Hong Kong skyline is another attraction on the list of must-see things in China. Hong Kong is a bustling city-state that's been thriving for decades, and its skyline can be enjoyed from various vantage points. One of the best vantage points is Victoria Peak, where you see the skyscrapers forming a frame to the harbour. The view from Victoria Harbour is equally stunning.

Zhangjiajie National Park

Not the first place a tourist would think to visit, but Zhangjiajie National Park is one of the most enchanting landscapes in China. With its pillar-like rock formations, the park creates the background of a sci-fi movie. In addition to its natural attractions, the park also consists of a few man-made attractions. This is an attraction that's not recommended for the faint-hearted, but one of the best things to do if you are looking to add a little adventure to your vacation.
