You want to start an art journal but your pockets are light? Don't rush off to the art supply store or your friendly craft store...go to the 99¢ store instead and load up on all you need to get started!
yes, the lowly composition notebook! Buy this instead of a visual journal, sketchbook or expensive watercolor paper, for now. You just want something cheap to get your feet wet with art journaling!
Grab a couple of glue sticks, or whatever type of glue you see at the discount store...you'll need a lot to keep the pages glued together.
Better yet, get some modge podge or gel medium if you happen to be at the craft store, since these items are the best at keeping the pages together.
yes, grab any kind of patterned paper you see! Don't worry about how it looks; we only need it to reinforce the pages in the composition notebook. You just might have some of this type of paper at home already, so collect it....old magazines, newspaper or bits of sturdy paper!
OK...I lied.... you are going to have to make the trip to a real art supply store for this item OR you can order it from Amazon if you're not close to any craft stores. You'll need this to shore up the thin pages in the composition notebook!
Buy the white gesso, and go by price and not brand. We're not painting the Mona Lisa, so no expensive brands!
Anything that will add color to the page is ok... grab that pan of kiddie watercolors or poster paint will do! Just make sure you have all of the basic colors. Extra points if the store has real craft paint!
markers are great for adding text and lettering...get as many colors as you can. These discount brands dry out fast, so don't stock up on them.
now these items you can stock up...you can hand-carve stamps (with an X-acto knife) to make unique patterns in your art journal. Don't know how to carve? Just go to YouTube and find a stamp carving tutorial!
yes, a credit card....make sure it's one saved over from a closed account. Even better to have more than one, because you can cut notches to make a design tool for paint.
This list wouldn't be complete without Sharpies! They are great for lettering, sketching and drawing lines for text.
