iPad Summit Nuggets

I was scheduled to present the "1 iPad Classroom" and was contacted that am to see if I could fill in for a speaker that was ill. Little did I know that it was the app-tastic Sue Gorman that I would be punting for. Fortunately, her topic of "Student Centered iLessons - Redefining Classroom Instruction for K-12" aligned to a presentation that I had entitled "Apps to Grow With: App-tivities Across the Curriculum."

Greg Kulowiec (a Twitter crush of mine... even if I was exactly sure how to pronounce his last name) shared some great ideas for workflow and collaboration. The biggest takeaway for me was the mashup of Explain Everything and Google Drive to create collaborative screencasts. While you can't truly collaborate with Explain Everything as you can in Google Drive, students can upload an .xpl (Explain Everything file) to a shared Google Drive folder, have another student open that file in Explain Everything, add additional slides, and return the file or video to Google Drive.

I am sure many of you remember the tedious task of printing sheets of manipulatives, laminating said manipulatives, and nursing the arthritic fist that ensues from cutting out each manipulative and putting them in to ziplocs. First period goes so well... but then Johnny in 3rd period has two duplicate amphibians and Sally is missing the fraction 1/2. All of this can be solved by going paperless with a shared dropbox of images and allowing students to pull those images and sort in a screen-casting or whiteboard app. Here is the link to a sample Dropbox with app images (open this folder on your iPad and sort the images in a screen-casting app like Explain Everything to get a feel for what you can do with a repository of images). One suggestion Autumn Laidler suggested providing living and nonliving images and having students sort then and then screencast over them.

Autumn Laidler shared a bat inquiry project that 1st, 4th, and 6th grade students compiled using their iPads for creation and research and their Google+ learning community as a venue for collaboration. Check out the Vimeo video that showcases their work.

As you may well know, I am a firm believer in showcasing student projects. Autumn Laidler came equipped to her session with posters with student photos and QR codes. The photos were taken with an iPad app like BeFunky that utilizes professional filters, and the QR codes went to audio recordings using the app Chirp, PDF's of Keynotes, or videos of student work. Great idea for parent nights and student events.

As an app-a-holic and app-hoarder, I am always looking for the next best app. I was very pleased to find LoiLoNOTE. The app is not available in the app store just yet... but keep an eye on this gem. Looks like a mash-up between Inspiration, Explain Everything, and more...

Rhonda Mitchell did such an excellent session to support the why and how of learning e-portfolios for elementary. My full notes for the session are here. One of my favorite take-aways from this session was the suggestion of 5 holistic category tags for the e-portfolio: Thinker, Knower, Communicator, Collaborator, Leadership. After over two years of online communication, I was super psyched to meet Reshan Richards (the inventor of Explain Everything) in person.

These conferences are as much about the content as they are about the collaboration. Was very excited to meet @MrCasal, @MsMagiera, @cre8tivmind, @angelamaiers, @finddonorth, @JaimeVanderG, @cordym, @jallen, @Modblog1 in person (my sincerest app-ologies for anyone I left off this list).
