Because of poor acoustics, students in classrooms miss 50 percent of what their teachers say and patients in hospitals have trouble sleeping because they continually feel stressed. Julian Treasure sounds a call to action for designers to pay attention to the "invisible architecture" of sound.
A few days ago I posted on Facebook a quote from a young woman* with auditory processing disorder. She described how she understands maybe only a few words in a conversation and uses body language and context to try to figure out what the other person is saying.
"What does Mrs. Jones mean we will be bent tomorrow?" I thought to myself. "I don't get it?" I asked my friend. "We are presenting tomorrow?" she responded, laughing as she walked away after the bell. "Oh, wow" I thought, shaking my head. Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) can be confusing to understand.
Another "real story' brought to you from a mum I have grown to know and love, who also has a support group on Facebook APD Australia New Zealand and is always there to share her news with Holly and help others who may have questions. It can also be a great resource.
Auditory Processing Auditory Processing Disorder Defined Auditory Processing Disorder (formerly called Central Auditory Processing Disorder or CAPD) is really an umbrella term that describes various sub-types of disordered auditory processing in a child or an adult. We jokingly say that our sweet Hailey has super ears. With her particular aspects of auditory processing disorder, she can hear sounds far away as if they were close by.
A learning disability in listening comprehension affects a child's ability to process auditory information. Children with deficits in listening comprehension often appear to not follow directions or understand particular concepts. These children have to work extra hard at comprehending what they hear. Fortunately, there are steps teachers may take to help these students succeed in the classroom.
Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) - When the brain doesn't interpret words or sounds correctly, but there is not a problem with an individual's hearing. There is a reduced ability to discriminate, recognize, or comprehend auditory information with CAPD.
Introduction Let's talk about educational audiology and what things we see in the classroom. This has become an area that has become more interesting to me lately as I am doing consulting and not working full-time in a clinic.
