The Maldives is one of the most sought after travel destinations in the world and one of the least known details is that the country has 12 different airports.

Gan International Airport

Can international Airport is located on Addu Atoll and is about 544 kilometres south of Male. The airport is smaller than the Male airport hence the number of flights that are accommodated is also limited.

Hanimadhoo International Airport

Located in Haa Dhaalu Atoll which is about 287 kilometres away from male has a single asphalt runway for both domestic and international flights hence restricting the number of flights the airport can accommodate.

Villa International Airport

Villa Internationa Airport which is operated by Villa Group has a single concrete runway but serves around 170,000 passengers annually. There are many resorts located in the vicinity so many tourists opt to take this airport as their destination when arriving to the Maldives.

Dharavandhoo Domestic Airport

Located in the Baa Atoll which is about 115 kilometres away from Male this is a privately owned airport that is operated by the Island Aviation Services.

Kadhdhoo Domestic Airport

Kadhdhoo Domestic Airport was one of the first Domestic airports to be built in the Maldives in order to connect the islands scattered away from the capital Male. This is one of the airports that is operated by the Maldives Airports Corporation and one of the significant facts about this airport is that it has a single runway.

Kaadedhdhoo Domestic Airport

Located on Kaadedhdhoo island the Kaadedhdhoo Domestic Airport was opened in 1993 and has been accommodating flights from Male, Kadhdhoo and Gan. The Kaadedhdhoo island is uninhabited so it will not aid you in going to see Maldives attractions but it will be suitable to go island hopping.

Fuvahmulah Domestic Airport

Located about 500 kilometres away from Male the Fuvahmulah Domestic Airport was opened in 2011 and is operated by the Government of Maldives.

Dhaalu Domestic Airport

This is the largest and newest domestic airport in the Maldives as it was opened only in 2017. The runway is quite large allowing it to accommodate large planes and the airport uses solar energy in some of its operations taking a step towards a greener environment.

Thimarafushi Domestic Airport

This domestic airport was built in 2013 and is located on Thimarafushi island which is in the Thaa Atoll. The airport has flight connecting only to Male making it easier for anyone travelling to the Thaa Atoll.

Kooddoo Domestic Airport

Kooddoo Domestic Airport is located on Kooddoo Island and it was opened in 2012 and located about 384 kilometres south of Male. The airport is owned by a private company known as Bonavista Maldives Pvt Ltd and operated by the Island Aviation Services. If you are staying at hotels such as The Residence Maldives Dhigurah this airport would be the most convenient location for you.

Ifuru Domestic Airport

Ifuru Domestic Airport was built in 2015 to connect the Raa Atoll islands and the Noonu Atoll islands to the capital.

More popularly known as the Male Airport the velana International Airport is the largest and the busiest airport in the Maldives. Even though there are three other international airports in the country this is by far the biggest one and caters to many international and domestic flights.
