Best Beaches in Sri Lanka- Paradise within a paradise

Sri Lanka, being a small island in the Indian Ocean, is blessed with many beaches that vary from the most basic one to the postcard view worthy ones. Here are some of the best beaches on the island.

1

Arugambay

Located in the south-eastern coastal area about 300km away from Colombo, Arugam Bay is a popular spot among surfers and snorkelers. It is notable to mention that the very first international surfing competition was held here in 2014. There's more to do here; explore the ruins of a Buddhist temple named Muhudu Maha Viharaya, go to the highest point in Pottuvil, look out for the crocodile rock in the distance. The best time to visit is between March and October.

2

Pasikuda

Another beautiful beach in the east with its white sandy shores and the turquoise blue stretch of the calm ocean, this one is bound to take your breath away. It is popular among many locals and tourists alike as it is safe for all levels of swimmers. An advantage of the beach here is that there is absolutely no particular season to visit- thus making it very convenient for a lot of tourists. It is home to many luxury resorts that will treat the guests with the utmost of comfort and give a slice of paradise.

3

Mirissa

A beach down south which is ideal for swimming and intermediate surfing, Mirissa welcomes tourists from all over the world. It is also well known for Dolphin and whale watching. One of the spectacular spots one should visit in Mirissa is the coconut tree hill located only a few minutes away from the beach. A hill crowded with tall palm trees overlooking the sea makes it a wonderful spot for a picnic. Do not miss the glorious sunset; as the sun begins to descend into the horizon leaving the skies ablaze in a hue of colours and the trees turn into dark silhouettes against the sky- it is a spectacular view that should not be missed. Furthermore, this little coastal town is also popular for many beach parties and raves.

4

Mount Lavinia

Mount Lavinia is a suburb in Colombo itself and is only a 30 minutes' drive away from Colombo Fort. Due to its convenient access, it is the most popular sea-bathing spot in the city. The waves are usually quite calm and friendly. During some occasions, they are deemed risky- in which case a warning is given out by the lifeguards around the area. There are many accommodation options available as well to cater to those who prefer to stay near the beach and away from the main city but still close enough to the main attractions. An option is the Berjaya Hotel Colombo which is a well-known Mount Lavinia beach hotel.

5

Bentota

Located 65 kilometres away from the capital, this is again a good option for those who want to get away from the city for a quick beach break. With many water sports being offered along with the pristine beaches and year-round tropical weather, it is a perfect spot for those who want to relax by the sea and get lost to sounds of the waves crashing.
