Nothing disheartens a boater more than returning home from vacation only to find that his boat, cover and all, has been stolen. Utah sees hundreds of boat thefts each winter because boat owners failed to take preventative measures. Follow these five tips to ensure you don’t become a victim of boat theft.
This includes electronics and fishing tackle. Leaving your valuables aboard your prized vessel can attract thieves who strip boats for parts and sell them on secondary markets. In addition to removing valuables, covering your boat with a boat cover will detract thieves, as well as keep protect it from Utah’s winters.
Taking inventory isn’t just for cargo ships. Documenting all of your boating equipment, making special note of serial numbers, will help you identify stolen items if you happen to be an unfortunate victim.
Marking lifejackets, fishing gear and boat covers will help Utah law enforcement officers trace your equipment if it’s ever stolen.
Take pictures of both the interior and exterior of your boat. Label, date and sign the photos, and store them in a safe place outside of your boat. Document all boating equipment in the same manner.
Trailered boats parked at home are targets because thieves can easily hitch up and drive off when the owner’s away. You can make your boat as difficult to steal as possible by parking the trailer with the hitch facing away from the street. Using a trailer hitch lock is another wise precaution to take; so is removing one or all of the trailer tires and storing them in a safe place, or getting a wheel lock.
