Top 5 Pizza Types - The Best Comfort Food

Pizza is one of the most popular fast food options available in the world and while the main ingredient of pizza is cheese, there are a variety different types of pizzas and here are the top five.

1

Neopolitan Pizzas

Considered to be the authentic way of making pizzas, Neopolitan pizzas are made with mozzarella cheese and fresh tomatoes. This type of pizza is covered by official rules by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana which authorises only three main variations of Neopolitan pizzas; namely, pizza marinara, pizza Margherita and pizza Margherita extra. Pizza marinara has tomatoes, garlic, oregano and extra virgin olive oil. Pizza Margherita includes tomatoes, sliced mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil while pizza Margherita extra has the same ingredients except the mozzarella is from Campania. The limitations to the toppings are generally because Neopolitan pizzas are so thin that they cannot bear the weight of a heavy layer of toppings. If you are looking for Neapolitan pizzas in Bangkok, they are likely to be found on the menus of several restaurants in Silom Bangkok including restaurants in hotels such as the Anantara Sathorn Bangkok Hotel.

4

Indian Pizza

Pizza in India has been heavily localised and is considered spicier and has a more liberal approach to vegetables. Toppings are also heavily influenced by local food so it is not surprising to find tandoori chicken, paneer or even pickled ginger on top of your pizzas.

2

Pizza Rustica

This type of pizza is found in Rome and other parts of Italy. It is commonly sold in taking away shops and the pizza has a rectangular shape and often 1-2 centimetres thick which makes it closer to a pie or a quiche. Unlike its Neopolitan counterpart, it is not cooked in a wood-fired oven but in an electric oven which gives it a thin, crisp base. Most variations are heavy on the meat and cheese.

3

American Pizza

Due to the influx of many Italian immigrants in the early 1900s, the United States has developed several regional types of pizzas that are quite different from the Italian originals. Chicago offers deep dish pizza which uses a large amount of cheese and a chunky tomato sauce and arguably creates something that is closer to a pie than a pizza. Unlike other pizzas, the toppings are located underneath a layer of tomato sauce. Another variation is New York style pizza, which has a very thin crust and has dry mozzarella cheese sprinkled over tomato sauce. Further, Detroit style pizza is a square pizza with a crispy but deep crust.

5

Japanese Pizza

Pizza in Japan has also been altered to suit local palates. Most pizzas use mayonnaise sauces and ingredients such as corn, avocado, potatoes and even eel. It is also one of the few countries to have the only squid as a pizza topping. Yet another popular topping is Chinese char siu pork which is generally used for ramen. There are also local variations to the crusts including crusts made from traditional Japanese mochi cakes. Sweet pizzas involving honey and chocolate are also popular in Japan.
