This post is related to research and mainly about Machine learning/Deep learning.

There are many such research papers and you can find them here: https://arxiv.org/
http://dl.acm.org/
http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/guesthome.jsp?reload=true
https://scholar.google.co.in/
http://academic.research.microsoft.com/

A bit of advice to everyone, please don't go with the hot topics currently going on the market and it changes from time to time so first try to take some good MOOC, read some good standard reference books and then decide whether you want to pursue it or not. ML, AI and DL these things are not for everyone and you can only realize this once you start working on these things, so those who are going to join IITs/IISC please first explore different fields, try to take different subjects and then based on your interest choose your research/project field.

When I joined IISc two years back I was told that IISc is good for research but not for placement. Unfortunately majority of people still believe that. A few of my friends who could easily get into IISc (a.i.r <50) joined IITB as a result. Although personally I don't believe that high package is a parameter of success but still the society seems to focus only on that one parameter. So here I give u a detailed statistics of placement in CSA....

IIT Kanpur admissions

Program structure for MTech :
One of the most flexible structures across IITs, the only compulsory courses are Algorithms and Mathematics for Computer Science. You are required to do 6-8 courses in total across 2 years (minimum of 6, maximum can be up to 10, or more with permission). You will also have a thesis that lasts for a year (or more, depending on how you wish to structure it). Normal schedule is taking 3 or 4 courses in the first two semesters, and then working on your thesis in the next two.
Research areas:
Kanpur has had a very strong theory group traditionally, and recently added 4 new (soon to be 5) faculty who all work in Machine Learning / Computer Vision. So it can claim to be as good as any other institute in these areas. In addition, it also seems to be a hotbed for computer security as there is a lot of investment and activity being held. I am pretty bad at all other aspects of CS, so feel free to contact other Kanpur students to ask about other areas. You can also check here : http://csrankings.org/ and see what areas interest you, and find out the relevant professors.
Peer group:
There are very active student groups that conduct reading sessions in various topics. For example, SIGML conducts reading sessions, paper discussions, and organizes Skype talks in Machine Learning, where we are given tutorials by leading industry researchers as well as academics. You can find more details about this group here : http://www.cse.iitk.ac.in/users/sigml
Placements:
Placements at IIT Kanpur are at par with every other IIT in the country. Most companies are open for MTech (this includes all the big names like Microsoft, Uber, Goldman Sachs, Adobe, Samsung), and offer the same profiles and the same packages. In addition, the strong alumni network means that you can always apply off campus with the IIT tag and get in where you want. The only thing that matters in this regard is your own aptitude.
On a personal note, I would urge students with interests in machine learning / vision to apply to Kanpur. The pattern of the written tests mean that you do not need to be good at computer systems/architecture if you can show you are good at probability / linear algebra and so on. In addition, I felt the questions in the latter section were easier than those in the systems sections, so it really is a huge bonus if you did not do well in GATE but want to pursue an MTech and are good at specific topics.
TL;DR - Most flexible course structure, best for research in ML/CV/Theory and other areas, written test has specific provisions for you to study according to your strengths.
Feel free to contact me, or any of the other IIT Kanpur students (Arindam, Shubham, Akshay, Nitish and others) present in this group for doubts (we might take some time to respond as our end semester exams are drawing near
