Visit Sohar Castle

Sohar Castle is one of the most prominent attractions in the entire city. The castle was constructed sometime between the 13th and 14th centuries by the Emirs of Hormuz. The castle was captured by Imam Nasser bin Murshid Al Ya'arubi who expelled the Portuguese invaders from the castle. Since then, it has been used as the Al-Bu Said dynasty's administration centre. Among the interesting features of the Sohar Castle is an escape tunnel that runs from the fort's interior to the Buraimi Wilayat which is located about 10 kilometres to the west. This route is believed to have been used to obtain reinforcements during times of war. The castle is also home to a museum.

Aside from relaxing and a chance to explore a rich heritage, Sohar also offers ample opportunities for shopping. There are quite a few shopping centres in the city if you wish to load up on branded goods, electronics and other department store items. Lulu, Al Fair and Safeer Hypermarket are great places to find these items and to get away from the heat. If you would like a more traditional shopping experience, you can head to the traditional Souk located in the centre of the town to browse through and purchase a range of unique items that are only found in souks. The market located in Al Hujra, close to the famous Sohar Castle is also a great choice for traditional souq merchandise.
