The Persian Gulf Grouper

The Persian Gulf Grouper

Better known as the Brown Spotted Reef Cod, the Brown Spotted Grouper is called the souman in Persian dialect. This fish belongs to the Serranidae family and is common in the Persian Gulf. A full grown Brown Spotted Grouper will reach lengths of 12-75cms and can way up to 7kgs. Its natural habitat are the coral beds while its large pectoral and caudal fins help it to manoeuvre and move quite speedily through water. You can identify the fish by its pale green body covered in brown circular patches; the belly is a light green colour. Five dark brown bands are seen to circle the vertical diameter of the fish which when disturbed has the capacity to change colour in order to blend in to its surroundings. This grouper can open its mouth to the full diameter of its body. Favourite food includes cuttlefish, crabs and small fish. It hunts by hiding within cave openings and coral beds.

The White Sea Bass is a popular game fish that has a mild flavour. It comprises of an elongated body and pointy compressed head. The mouth has a lower jaw that projects out and is slightly large with a row of small pointy teeth. The White Sea Bass can be bluish grey in colour with darker speckles and a silvery underside. The largest recorded specimen of this fish was over 5 feet in length. A White Sea Bass will feed on sardines, squid, anchovies and larger fish such as Pacific Mackerel.

A full grown fish will reach a length of 30 inches and the body colour will vary from grey to black depending on its age. This fish is caught on a commercial basis and is a favourite when game fishing.
